Once again Vauxhall Fashion Scout is on the search for the UK’s best new fashion and accessories designers. Designers are invited to apply to take part in the largest independent designer event during London Fashion Week February 2010.
Heading towards its eighth season Vauxhall Fashion Scout is creating its very first designer exhibition within their stunning venue - the historic Freemasons’ Hall in Covent Garden. This exhibition will enable accessories and clothing designers to showcase their collections, alongside Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s acclaimed catwalk and presentation designers, to a fantastic range of national and international media and buyers.
As well as their high profile event in London, next season Vauxhall Fashion Scout is also expanding to Paris Fashion Week, with an exclusive showroom in the heart of the Marais featuring a selection of the UK’s hottest new designers.
Designers are also invited to apply for the prestigious Merit Award, previously won by William Tempest and David Koma, and to be part of the highly acclaimed Ones To Watch show.
Successful designers will benefit from Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s acclaimed approach to working with emerging talent. This initiative includes the provision of a year-long programme of mentoring salons hosted by key people from within the fashion industry, and workshops, both aimed at helping designers build and maintain successful creative businesses.
In order to be given the opportunity to show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout, designers must have reached both the creative and business levels required to show, present or exhibit at an event of this calibre. Applicants are therefore judged by the following criteria: creativity, quality, and business development. The judging is carried out by a selection panel that features industry experts all with experience of working with young designers.

For the past few days load of girls having been lining up for casting for the Ford Models Supermodel of the World UK Search. It’s not any easy decision - there are so many great girls but so few with that special something! The UK winner - who will be crowned in London on the 3rd of November - will then go on to compete against the other international winners to take home the Supermodel of the World title.
Most of the girls are quite nervous at the casting - for many of them it’s the first casting they’ve ever been too! Lots of mums with daughters - it’s quite nice actually. I think when you want to be a model you need to be confident and if you have support it’s just great! Modeling is just not an easy job - it’s looks easy and glamorous but that’s the job, to make it look easy! Most people get anxious going to a job interview but just think - a model can go to 12 more more casting i.e. job interviews per day!
Vogue.com’s Dolly Jones, designer William Tempest and Reaya Goldman, competition producer and Ford model scout will be the judges at the fashion show. The 12 finalists will participate in a fashion show styled by me with head makeup artist Lan Nguyen and hair by Tim Furssedonn from Toni & Guy.
I’ve already selected the clothes from the A/W collection of Jaeger and there are so many beautiful pieces. It should be a fun show!
This season Vauxhall Fashion Scout had three designers from China for a group show! It was quite exciting as the clothes were vibrant, beautiful and all had a very distinct look and feel. Styling a group show is always a challenge and of course there was the language issue. The designers were so lovely and kind to work with. It’s kind of fun when you don’t have a common language, just a love for fashion. My team was also very organized as there were quite a few looks for the dressers.
Each collection had a Chinese feel about it: the cherry blossom colours, the silk fabrics and the butterflies and embellishment, and at the same time it all felt like fashion. We often think of China for it’s manufacturing abilities and not so much for it’s design but really in the last 5 years or so this has been changing, and it’s great to have an opportunity in London to see designers from other countries who want to show here!
Wang Yuan, the creative director of Ground Show, was born in the Chinese city of Qingdao. She is a talented violinist and her experience in classical music is still a strong influence on her designs today. This is the first show for Ground Show to be held in Europe. Ground Show and its sister brand, Ground Susan, are distributed in over 100 stores across China.
I loved all these colours and the layering was beautiful. I often wear so much black but I was just inspired by all the colours!
Xindier, founded in 2005, is one of the leading brands to come out of Shenzhen and it’s business includes design and manufacturing. Xindier head fashion designer, Xie Haiping aims to continue the innovation of a brand which has become associated with high-end Chinese urban women.
Fashion Shenzhen 2 - Tangy by Liang Zi, founder and creative director of the label is one of the leading fashion designers to come out of China in recent years. Established in 1995 Tangy has over 400 shops throughout China.
The third and last designer of the show, Tangy, featured clothes that felt very luxurious. The fabrics were rich yet earthy. Everything felt simple and easy to wear but just so feminine and beautiful to the touch.
These dresses by Xie Haiping for the Xindier labe were amazing! It was like very one was a show finale piece that you just wanted to use for a shoot. The dresses were very structured and very very heavy. The detail was extraordinary and everything had a whimsical quality!
It always takes a few days for me to recover after the aftermath of London Fashion week. The week involves so much more for me then just showing up to a few shows to do some makeup tthen to go home. The amount of physical and emotional energy it takes to head up the makeup teams for 11 shows is incredible.
I try to do my best to keep my makeup team positive and happy. I think if you’re team know they are going to be looked after and are in a good envirnoment, it therefore motivates them to work as hard as they can for you in return. Add on about 6-7 press interviews per day and the fact that I had to move house the last day of LFW ( talk about timing) it’s needless to say I felt slightly drained after the big event…well more like I’ve been hit by a bus if I’m honest!
This year I got on a flight the next day to Florida to visit my Grandmother and some family to have a few days time out. As I was lying by the pool yesterday I had a little flash back giggle of a saying my friend Terry Barber( one of the head makeup artists from MAC UK) used to say "have a little swim in lake you" When you have a job that is not only what you do but also defines who you are ( any artistic person is the same) It’s very hard to switch off. I think it’s so important to take a day or two every now and then to have a step back and breathe so you don’t get creative burn out.
Check out what me and a few other creative peop’s are up to in " a day in the life" on Fashion Face TV’s blog page- http://www.pixiwoo.blogspot.com
Fashion Face TV also came back stage to a few shows at LFW so watch this space to have a glimse to see what else I was up to backstage- ( i’ll post them up as soon as they come out)
In the meantime, check out these links too for more beauty behind the scenes… After catching a glimse, you’ll really understand why I needed that "swim in lake me!"
