For every fashion show there is always a hair and make up test. It’s important to see how the whole look comes together. You usually have a moodboard that inspired the designer’s collection and you might also have a separate moodboard for hair and makeup. The right hair and make up can change everything so it’s really important to know what look and feel is right for your show. Make up and hair trends are important in themselves as the trends that we see this London Fashion Week could influence our makeup choices for next summer.

This is the second season that I’ve styled Prophetik and I loved the hair and make up for the SS11 look. Tim Furssedonn, International Creative Director for Toni & Guy created the hair look and Lan Nguyen created the makeup look. The theme was midnight garden and we wanted the models to have a very otherworldly look that was youthful and fairy like.
Toni & Guy were kind enough to send these instructions – here’s how to get the look:
• Prep hair with label.m Volume Mousse and roughly dry to build texture
• Divide hair in two uneven sections and plait both from the back of the head forwards, close to the scalp and secure
• Distress the plait with the fingers and place in hair pieces to build a 3D effect
• Finish with a light coating of label.m Hairspray and Shine Spray Must-have Products label.m Volume Mousse, label.m Hairspray, label.m Shine Spray. Session Kit – Label.m, Pintail Comb, elastic, grips
…and here is a guide sent by Lan Nguyen for the makeup:
Make up Inspiration: Ethereal mermaids with sparkling and magical eyes.
You can recreate the look for a night out by customizing your eyelashes and adding a few diamante sparkles at the corner of your eyes. Or apply a soft splash of glitter under and above lash lines.
The skin was prepped with Perfeckt skin gel primer to even out the skin. We then used a pale concealer around the eyes and around the cheekbones to pale out the skin. Soft peach and pink eye shadow was brushed passed softly pass the eyebrows. Dark pink eye shadow was used to contour the sockets and blended outwards to make the eye look more doll like and wider.

Using mixing medium to help the glitter stick on the eyebrows and sparsely around the inner corners and above brow bone pressing gently with the fingers. Eyelashes were then attached with crystal beads customized a few days before the show. Final touch was adding the crystals randomly using duo glue to stick them to the skin. Lips were nude with a peach gloss.

Lan Nguyen was the head makeup artist for The Art of Being by Elizabeth Emanuel and she shares a few tips with us on her couture makeup look.
What was the inspiration for the makeup?
LN -The inspiration was based on make up that is Paris Couture. The treatment of John Galliano’s catwalk shows which are full of style and colourful make up. I wanted to capture the element of this show’s style which is dramatic and beautiful with a fantasy element of doll like features.
How did you come up with the concept?
LN – After taking a look at extreme couture make up I decided to convert it into a london style which Elizabeth Emanuel had requested. By merging together the Paris feeling of beautiful groomed features such as the eyebrows and lips with exaggerated eyelashes. I studied mannequins and dolls from natural to extreme which helped me decide on what parts I wanted to play up. Then it was about mixing in the London smokey wet look with effortless grooming.
What products did you use?
LN – I used the first colour cosmetic range from Rituals which consists of pure precious stones such as pearl and jade which conditions the skin. Also the key look was the perfect matte to satin finish red lip where I used the lip pencil and Lip Jewel Lipstick which has an intense color. On the eyes I used Perfectionist eyeliner for a strong gloss finish and Intense Look masacra for volume eyelashes. Also added eyelashes on top of the eye as well as bottom for added drama. Underneath the eye was a deconstructed beautiful Magic Blush in two toned pink blended as a highlighter. Finally I used Satin Finish Compact Powder which is 100% natural and gave an even toned finish.
Many people commented on how couture the makeup looked. What elements can be used in everyday life?
LN – You can adapt the look by filling in your eyebrows with a shade darker eyebrow shadow or pencil to make them look groomed and full. Also placing strong liner and eyelashes with a red lip is beautiful together. Keeping the rest of your make up minimal.
Was this look a challenge for your team?
LN – I think my team was great. Some of the girls from AOFM who assisted me had experience in doing strong red lips and eyebrows, but in general like a test, being under pressure to get it perfect! They really enjoyed in creating the look. It has such strong technique elements and hidden contouring which is naked to the eye and when under pressure you can forget to do a few bits. I also had several make up artists friends who came to help me and for them it was totally different to be working on this show because its not often you get to create a couture look for London Fashion Week!

This is the second edition of Makeup is Art, it comes out in September during London Fashion Week. I worked with Editor and makeup artist Lan Nguyen with hair stylist Tim Furssedonn on a shoot for this edition.
We worked on the adorment section of the book. In general I’m not that excited about beauty shoots, as a stylist there’s not always that much for me to do. This shoot was quite exciting, the brief was quite simple Lan asked me to bring a selection that would inspire her. Lan loves bling so I brought loads of very shiny delightful, whymsical pieces and we shot some wonderful images. I can’t wait to see the book!

Makeup Is Art is a makeup booked that was published last year and launch during London Fashion Week, it was so successful that it’s being published worldwide. I worked with creative director and head makeup artist Lan Nguyen on the cover shoot.

On a beauty shoot it’s so important to have a good selection of jewellery and accessories. We had everything from a large selection of hats to an array of haberdashery. It’s part of the stylist’s job to inspire the makeup artist with the selection of clothes and all the accessories.
The team inspires each others and it’s really that syngering that make a great shoot. Even though we have tear sheets and a moodboard you can still find lots of inspiration on the day. It doesn’t necessarily take you away from your original ideas but it actually might just push your creativity further than you expected.

This is the present cover.

The new edition will launch at London Fashion Week September 2010 so it won’t be out for a while, but I’ll post some images when the book comes out.
