Louis De Gama

Posted by Rebekah Roy on June 24th, 2009

Louis de Gama3 Louis De Gama

I saw Louis De Gama’s work quite a few years back at a London PR so I can’t tell you how happy I was to discover he’d recently opened a shop on Cheshire Street in East London. Louis is one of the most charming delightful people that I have had the pleasure to meet.

ILouis de Gamma1 Louis De Gama

Louis de Gama gained a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design from the University of Westminster and spent his first few years after graduating working alongside Salvatore (bespoke tailoring), Tristan Webber and the renowned duo Boudicca. He spends most of his time in his studio, but if you’re lucky you’ll find him sewing in his shop.

His dresses fit me so well. They are very fitted pieces with sharp tailoring, dresses that drape over the body with leather straps giving the dress an edge. Satins, crochet and chiffons are beautifully stitched together. I love the fusion of fabrics – everything has an ease about it but it’s quite complex and daring. I want everything in the shop!

Louis established his label Louis de Gama in 2000 with the launch of the first collection for London Fashion Week; the entire collection was subsequently bought by Brown Focus. The label is sold in selected boutiques in LA, NY, Tokyo, Dublin, Athens and Lisbon.

The shop carries Louis’ diffusion line – LdG by Louis de Gama with prices from £45 – the dresses are great! The label is sold in selected boutiques in LA, NY, Tokyo, Dublin, Athens, Lisbon, and London.

An Interview with Emma Griffiths of the label e.g.

Posted by Rebekah Roy on April 17th, 2009

Emma Griffiths Dress An Interview with Emma Griffiths of the label e.g.Recently I have been searching for tailored garments with an edge. I’ve been looking at new designers like Hemyca and Jasper Garvida who do sharp wearable tailoring. I like clothes with an attitude.

I recently came across the label e.g.  launched by Emma Grifiths, a Westminster University graduate, and Jeanpierre Kalebic (an ex-estate agent). They’re based in East London.

I’m always interested in new designers – they are never really all that new and have usually been sewing and designing most of their lives before setting up their own label. When I first looked at the colIection I loved e.g.’s  blue dress. It’s very strong and you could imagine using it in a shoot. I also liked that they used a model of colour. (It shouldn’t be noteworthy and maybe it shouldn’t matter but it does.)

Could you tell me your fashion background?
EG – I studied at Westminster University, where I was taught by Zowie Broach (founder of Boudicca) and I worked with Alexander McQueen. Following that I opened a small boutique in Clerkenwell, where I designed and made clothes for the stylish local ladies. My partner and I then set up e.g… at the beginning of this year.

Did your mum or grandmother sew?
EG – Yes, both. A lot of my clothes were made for me when growing up, which was nice because it gave me an understanding of where clothes came from. Nowadays kids don’t really have any inkling that their clothes are actually made by someone; ask them where a potato comes from and they will more than likely say Tescos.

What inspired your collection?
EG – I wanted to question woman’s place in a male dominated world and hopefully instill confidence in our clients. The cardinal skirts and tops for instance, I’ve taken aspects of the Roman Catholic Church, a male hegemony, and used them to make strong, confident ladies’ clothes. There are aspects of the 80s in there too, big shoulders, defined shapes all help the wearer to feel bigger and stronger than perhaps they are, like a suit of armour.

How many pieces are in the collection?
EG – We have about 30 at the moment but we intend adding 1 or 2 garments a week over the next few months to keep it fresh..

What piece/garment most represents your collection?
EG – I will have to say the ribbon jacket. (It’s the jacket in the image below.) It is the strongest, piece and really stands out as something special.

What advice would you have for someone starting an on-line business?
EG – The website has to look perfect. It doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive, our site for instance is quite basic in terms of functionality, but it looks good. No spelling or grammatical errors, clean and easy to navigate, informative. Then get out there and tell people about it, get in touch with everyone you know and tell them to tell their friends, get in touch with as many relevant blogs and online magazines, and of course try and get some editorial in newspapers and magazines.

What is the most important thing you wanted to achieve when designing your site?
EG – It had to look clean, crisp and structured, like our clothes.

What has been the most challenging aspect of starting a new business?
EG – The hardest part is the set up, money goes out at an alarming rate but nothing comes back in, its quite scary!

Will you be doing a show at London Fashion Week Sept 09?
EG – Not Sure yet, we are looking at the possibility of getting some funding.

Emma Griffiths LookBook1 An Interview with Emma Griffiths of the label e.g.

Tea or Coffee?
EG – 2 cups of tea when I wake up, a cup of coffee following that, followed by another cup of coffee and then generally tea for the rest of the day (it has to be Yorkshire tea).

An Interview with William Tempest – Lookbook Shoot

Posted by Rebekah Roy on December 9th, 2008

If haven’t already heard of  William Tempest, you will.

WilliamTempest An Interview with William Tempest Lookbook Shoot

  • He was one of the four finalists of Fashion Fringe 2008.
  • He did a two-year national diploma course in fashion design and textiles when he was only 16.
  • He graduated with a first class honours degree in womenswear design from London College of Fashion.
  • He worked four seasons with Giles Deacon and went to Paris to work with Jean Charles de Castelbajac.
  • He’s designed some pieces for Madonna.

The model is L’atesha at IMG and that’s Lan doing the make-up.

Last week we shot William’s pre A/W 09 collection. I was surprised he did a mid season collection as he’s so busy working on his A/W 2009 collection, which he plans to show at London Fashion Week!

Why did you do a pre-collection?

WT – Pre-collection is becoming much more of a focus for buyers, my pre- fall 09 collection will give me an added opportunity to present my label and to find further stockists.  It’s about placing my label more competitively, if I can offer a selection of new styles mid-season then this is great for my customer.

Will you be doing a show at London Fashion Week?

WT – Yes, I’ll be showing my Autumn/Winter 09 collection in London next February. I’ll also be going over to Paris Fashion Week at the start of March to sell the collection, dates and locations are all still to be confirmed.

Have you dresses any one famous? Do you do commissions?

WT – I recently dressed Emma Watson for the premier of her new film ‘The Tale of Despereaux’. She heard about me as she came to my show last September. It was a really fantastic opportunity making some pieces for her and she looked absolutely stunning in the outfit she wore, she has the confidence to pull it off!

And yes I do take private orders and commissions. I’ve been having quite a lot of interest since I collaborated with Diesel last year and exhibited my work throughout their Kings Road flagship store.

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to study fashion?

WT – I think you need to really think about what you want in terms of a career before enrolling on a fashion course. There are so many different areas to fashion which is great, but not every position is right for everyone. You shouldn’t enrol on a design course just because you like the idea of it, because what will you do afterwards?

Fashion is very competitive and is often extremely hard work for little results. For designers in particular you have to be confident in knowing that this is what you want to do, and be confident in knowing what you are about. You have to be prepared to fight for it and if you’re not hungry you wont go anywhere
