Today was the first day of the WGSN Drapers Fashion Summit and I styled a fashion show featuring 6 recent graduate designers. It’s always exciting to work with a graduate collection – it’s very fresh and you can see all the effort that went into the collection and the thought behind it. A graduate collection is different from a ‘fashion week’ collection; it’s usually smaller, maybe 10 pieces – we featured 3 looks from 6 designers. You can really see the development of an idea or technique that the student is working on – and of course the potential!

On the mannequins:
Ume Romaan – De Montford
Rory Longdob – Nottingham
Shivani Chavd – De Montford
Dominique Krai – Northbrook College
Camilla Woodman – Kingston
Parsha Gerayesh-Nejad – Westminister

This is a picture of a few of my dressers backstage – they did such great job. Backstage there was an amazing energy – we all loved the clothes but it was really just true teamwork. It just makes such a difference when you work with a team who has a positive attitude and really wants to do a good job!

I first met Gabby Young at London Fashion Week and you can’t help but adore her. She’s a big fan of Vauxhall Fashion Scout and was seeing quite a few shows there before heading off to the US to do a tour. One of her favourite fashion shows was Inbar Spector so it was only fitting that she wore one of Inbar’s dresses and with her red fishtail braid and bare feet she looked like a princess mermaid.

Koko was her biggest headline performance to date and it’s one of my favourite venues – it’s perfect for a cabaret – jazz event.
The show was like being at a circus complete with an acrobat. There were so many different choirs and people who joined Gabby on stage and it just felt like a magical night! It was a very happy audience and it was like being at one big party where every knows each other – even though you don’t, but it’s one of those rare events where strangers are talking to strangers and that warmth definitely comes from Gabby.

Beautiful Soul is known for its bespoke Kimono Collection and this is Nicola Woods second ready to wear collection which is called ‘Summer Breeze’. This season she exhibited at Vauxhall Fashion Scout with Felicites Presents and Ecoluxe London.
The silhouette is classic, easy shapes with ruffles and crop jackets but there’s something quite quirky and fun about the looks and it’s the prints! They are inspired by the English summertime and vintage kimono fabrics from Beautiful Soul’s archive of Japanese kimonos. Beautiful Soul is based in Notting Hill and the prints have subtle influences of the brightly coloured houses, tree blossoms, and local parks surrounding Nicola’s studio. Every season Nicola does classic and cute trenches - it’s nice to have a good summer trench as you never know when it’s going to rain!
Beautiful Soul uses British wool, sustainable organic fabrics and even the buttons are made from vegetable ivory – the seed from a palm tree!

I love this print!

Alice Lee Malene Oddershede Bach
I’m quite excited about styling Vauxhall Fashion Scouts’ Ones to Watch show during London Fashion Week. This season the designers are Alice Lee, Malene Oddershede Bach, Phoebe English and Shao Yen. The Ones To Watch is usually the designers’ first catwalk show so it’s a lot of pressure. Every season is, but at the beginning designers want to make the most of every opportunity.
The Ones to Watch has been a great launch pad for many designers. In September 2009 both Ada Zanditon and Hermione de Paula were in the Ones to Watch. The following season Hermione won Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s Merit Award and Ada is presently showing a film on the digital schedule at London Fashion Week.

Phoebe English Shao Yen
There is so much for a new designer to think about but Vauxhall Fashion Scout takes a huge amount of pressure off a new designer. You don’t have to think about production or finding a space to show. You don’t have to worry about PR and making sure people will attend the show. The designers are also given a hair and make up team and this season Lan Nguyen is the head make up artist and Tim Furssedunn (Creative Director at Toni and Guy) is doing the hair. It’s really important for a new designer to be able to just focus on their collection. It does seem like this should be the norm but most designers end up having to multitask, working on every aspect of their business while also having to design great clothing.
