Daisy de Villeneuve is the type of artist that once you start to recognize her work you’ll see it everywhere.
Her illustrations have a unique child like quality to them: I just love them!!! She’s designed Topshop’s quirky shoeboxes, customized Moet & Chandon bottles for Colette’s 10th anniversary, designed for Nike, the V&A Museum, has published 2 books and has done hundreds of other things. Every month you’ll see her work in one of the major fashion magazines.
So it’s not surprising that the Gap featured her in their Autumn Winter campaign and she will also be in the Holiday 2008 campaign for Christmas!
I asked Daisy de Villeneuve, a true fashion industry insider for a quote to use during my Viktor & Rolf fashion talk at the Barbican.
In your opinion, what’s the best way for someone to create their own distinct personal style?
The best way for someone to create their own distinct personal style is to be unique. Be original in your clothing choices, do not follow trends as you can end up looking like everyone else. I always like to take inspiration from other decades & mix my clothing to include vintage, designer & high street.
The Cult of Cherry really makes me want to have something in this colour – lipstick, gloss, nail polish, a dress, anything just something…the video seems to stir something inside of me, a longing for a deep rich colour...
I asked designer & super cool girl Erin Fetherston – a fashion industry insider for a quote to use during my Viktor & Rolf fashion talk at the Barbican.
In your opinion, what’s the best way for someone to create their own distinct personal style?
Personal style should be a reflection of personality. I think someone’s style is truly distinctive if it communicates something specific about it’s wearer; beliefs, values, tastes, background. And it never hurts to add in something that nobody else will have. – Erin Fetherston
I’ve spent the past couple of days looking at models. It’s so hard to find the perfect model – it’s all about casting and the right model is 80% of the work.
Summer is slow so everyone’s away. But really there are so many talented models. It can be really hard for a new designer to chose – who is going to be the face of their brand, is this face is going to sell the collection? It’s a lot of responsibility & pressure for a model. There are other things that influence your casting: the brief, the budget and scheduling. The model booker can make a huge difference; they’re usually quick and can send you a selection of models within minutes and if someone you like isn’t available they might be able to recommend someone else.
I’m always choosing models as part of team decision. It’s quite fun to chose a model for ones own project. When I did my fashion talk at the Barbican I wanted to have a model. I think it’s difficult for a model to stand in front of a live audiences and be comfortable.
Alys Hale from Storm Models was perfect, she looked great in the clothes and she was really fun and personable. People always think it’s just about how the model looks but her personality and attitude really count!
I asked some fashion industry insiders for quotes to use during my Viktor & Rolf fashion talk at the Barbican. Here is one from the delightful Piers Atkinson of the Daily Rubbish. In your opinion, what’s the best way for someone to create their own distinct personal style?
I THINK A MIXTURE OF; A GREAT EYE FOR FASHION DESIGN AND ADDING THE OCCASIONAL DESIGNER PIECE (RICH HUSBAND? FRIEND OF THE DESIGNER?!) WITH SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED ETC – AND I’M ALWAYS A FAN OF THE HOME-MADE ADDITION! MY ULTIMATE STYLE ICONS ARE ANNA PIAGGI, ZANDRA RHODES AND DIANE PERNET – ALL OF WHOM SEEM TO FOLLOW THIS ETHIC! FASHION ANYONE CAN BUY, STYLE IS AN ART!
One of my favourite characters is the Diva from the 5th Element. I think her costume is extraordinary and I always wished I’d met someone like her in real life. Well Bishi exceeded all my expectation – not only is she super nice but she’s extraordinary. I was able to watch her during her sound check as I was setting up for my presentation and I got to watch her whole performance as she started after my fashion talk. Mind blowing!
A girl with an electric sitar – how cool is that?! Well actually it was really cool. You felt like you were witnessing something very special.
Bishi arrived wearing her own canopy with two clown brides maids. She promenaded around the dolls house then stepped out from her canopy and went up the stairs. It was one on the most grandest entrances I have ever witnesses.
Bishi – singing from the top of the stairs that go no where.
Bishi is a singer, DJ and multi instrumentalist and plays her electric sitar standing up! She’s toured with the likes of Pulp and Goldfrapp. Her voice is very distinct – her can listen to her on her site.
