The Headscarf

Hermes scarf The HeadscarfThere is no accessory that can spruce up a wardrobe, add a dash of sophistication and is economically viable like this seasons hottest trend – the headscarf. The headscarf is popping up everywhere! From the runways of Burberry, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana to Proenza Schouler, the headscarf is the must-have accessory for every fashionista. The versatility of this must-have piece makes it perfect for a girl on a budget who is looking for an investment piece.

A headscarf can easily become a staple of your wardrobe. It can be tied around your head, body and even your bags to brighten winter hues. Prices range from as little as £4 to £200.

How to wear it? Try folding it into a triangle and wrapping it around your head with a bow under your chin, a la Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief. If this style is too conservative for you embrace your inner boho and fold it into a long thin piece, perfect for capturing the hippie chic look of the 60’s and 70s (think Nicole Richie and Mischa Barton).

On days you’re not in the mood to wear it around your head, the headscarf can be transformed into a necktie or bow. Wear it around your waist (think Gucci a/w 08) and it is perfect for capturing the Russian rocker look. Wrap it around an old bag and the scarf can transform a plain or old bag into a hot new piece!

With so many ways to wear it, a scarf should be everyone’s go-to accessory! Fear not fashionista, it is never too late to invest in this stylish yet timeless piece.

Knitting

Posted by Rebekah Roy on November 24th, 2008

Knitting has become popular again. Maybe it’s because it’s getting cold outside and we are thinking knitwear or maybe it’s just something creative to do. It’s not about economics as it’s often cheaper to buy a sweater then to make one. I personally love the accessories, the little gloves, hats and scarves!

Rowan have some of my favourite knitting patterns. (I don’t knit but my mum is an amazing knitter – which is why I probably don’t knit – I never needed to!) Rowan Studio offers some very fashion forward patterns – from capes to cardigans – you’d never think that knitwear could be sexy but it can!

Future Publishing is introducing a new magazine The Knitter in January 2009. It’s a monthly glossy magazine targeting the skilled knitter (i.e not me). The 100-page magazine will feature 10 patterns every month and a trend section with catwalk fashions.

Brandon Mably designs knitwear patterns for Vogue Knitting and Rowan Yarns. On December 6th he’s giving a workshop at the Fashion and Textile Museum. He will guide participants in choosing a range of colours and how to apply them into a swatch. Intarsia and fairisle will be demonstrated as part of the workshop, along with knitting in your ends. It is open to all levels with experience in basic stocking stitch, which will be used as the main stitch in the workshop!

Celia Birtwell Print Scarf at Topshop

Posted by Rebekah Roy on September 10th, 2007

Celia Birtwell Print Scarf.jpg I love accessories! A cute little neck scarf can make or break an outfit! When I lived in Paris I was an in awe of the many ways French women would wear a scarf. I was never one for the minimalist wardrobe, but the average Parisian women is all about details. They may all have a little black dress but the individuality is in the details. Really how many websites show you the scarf flat and also knotted, only Hermes! Ah, the French!
