After much anticipation, I have finally found out that I am showing my collection on Thursday 21st May in the afternoon and evening performances. Tickets for the Sew What? Graduate Fashion Show are available from ‘Nottingham Playhouse’ on 0115 9419 419.
I have had a great week. Last weekend I went back to London to assist Rebekah Roy at the Britain’s Next Top Model fashion show at Westfield shopping centre. The day consisted of 3 fashion shows that took place throughout the day and a competition fashion show too. The day was really successful and I am glad I got to escape my collection for a day or two.
This week I have been busy making all my final garments! And when I am not in the studio sewing, which is rare, I am spending my time shredding jersey.
I also have a portfolio deadline on Tuesday 5th – so am spending nights on photoshop perfecting boards for 2 competition projects that we entered at the beginning of the academic year.
My next task is to source 6 pairs of shoes for my models to wear in the fashion show…

This week I had a major tutorial in which I was to present 4 fully toiled outfits. I presented 4 toiled outfits, and I was given the go ahead to make all of them in the real fabrics. (I am still in the process of designing my 2 other outfits).
I have made a few changes to my line up in the last couple of weeks and I am much happier with it now. Here is a picture of a dress that I have been developing, it will be made of white jersey, and dip dyed halfway in terracotta all of which is to be shredded forming a layer of terracotta shredding on top of plain white.
During my tutorial some of my final fabrics were swapped around so they could be used for different garments, which I didn’t mind too much about. Luckily I have bought enough of each fabric to do this with.
Another change that was made to my collection was the finishing of my jersey pieces. Instead of binding my garments on the jersey-binding machine I was told to go to a factory called Josery Ltd in Hucknall, just outside of Nottingham city centre. Josery Ltd produces jersey garments such as sweatshirts for schools and rugby shirts and I was told to go there to buy jersey ribbing to bind the necklines of all my jersey garments.
So this morning I jumped on the tram and went to Josery Ltd and bought black ribbed binding and off-white (which was actually before the fabric was bleached white to be used by the factory) ribbed knitted binding. When I got back to the studio this afternoon I tried some binding samples with the ribbing, deciding the width, and now I have had the go ahead to start making all the jersey pieces.
Tomorrow I will begin making the 3 jersey garments that involve shredding first, as this will take some time in my evenings.

There are now only 5 weeks until the Sew What? Fashion Show! I recently went to London to Shepherd’s Bush and Berwick Street and bought the majority of my final fabrics. I will most likely have to make another trip to London in the next couple of weeks when I get the go ahead on my other outfits.
For the 4 shows that take place in Nottingham over 2 days on Thursday 21st May and Friday 22nd May 2009 the Fashion Design year group has been split in half; half will be showing on Thursday afternoon and Friday evening, and half on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon. Nottingham Trent’s Fashion Design are collaborating with Trent’s Fashion Knitwear over the 2 days, who will also be showcasing their graduate collections in the show. We are yet to know who is showing their collections on which day/afternoon or evening- our head of year is currently splitting the year in half.

Everyone is beginning to feel the pressure, while making their final garments alongside toiling the rest of their collections. There really is some amazing stuff being created!
Tickets for Sew What? Nottingham Trent’s Graduate Fashion Show are available from ‘NOTTINGHAM PLAYHOUSE’ on 0115 9419 419 from April 20th
Matinee Shows : 3.30pm each day for £7.00 (Product Exhibition from 2.30pm)
Evening Shows: 7.30pm each day for £14.00 (Product Exhibiton from 6.30pm)

There are only a frightening 7 weeks until the Nottingham Trent Graduate Fashion Show and the pressure is on! There are 4 shows that take place in Nottingham over 2 days on Thursday 21st May and Friday 22nd May 2009. The 4 shows titled ‘Sew What?’ are showcasing 78 talented Fashion Design Students, and their Degree Collections.
Nottingham Trent University broke up for Easter holiday on Friday, but I, and the majority of my fashion design peers are still in Nottingham over the Easter break working hard on our graduate collections. I have had the go ahead to make 2 out of 6 outfits in the real fabrics which is very exciting and everything is going to plan, thankfully!
Following on from my research about the Monolith Totem pole in Oslo and growths and erosion, I have become fascinated with my own personal photographs of the West Pier in Brighton, which was destroyed by a fire and has since been deteriorating. It has inspired my collection greatly, be it with the shredding, fabric choice, and dyeing effects.
Here is my line up with some of my final fabrics (minus one outfit which I am still developing):
Here are some images of my toiles of my final garments:

I am beginning to source all of my chosen fabrics, threads and buttons and zips in the correct quantities and will be making a trip to London in the next week to go to Shepherds Bush and Berwick Street! It is all becoming very real and exciting!

After all the hard work I have been doing lately working on my final collection, even a busy fashion student needs a bit of a break! On the weekend I treated myself to a little rummage through the vast piles in the Vintage Warehouse in Nottingham’s city centre.
The Vintage Warehouse is a huge space filled with piles of skirts, t-shirts, bags, shoes, coats etc for boys and girls. (The prices are so cheap! Especially compared to London vintage prices). They also offer a customising service, so that your purchase can be altered to fit you for around £5.00.

As I go so often I have become acquainted with the 2 guys that own the warehouse and sometimes they let me go downstairs into the basement for a rummage through the huge sacks of stock that their orders come in. They say that in the next year they want to turn the basement into a little coffee shop in which their customers can hang out in!
As I am graduating this summer and returning to London for good, I will be sad to leave this little gem behind. I think some trips to Nottingham shall be made purely just for the Vintage Warehouse!

Address:
The Vintage Warehouse
82-84 Lower Parliament Street,
Nottingham, Derbyshire
NG1 1EH
Opening times:
Mon – Sat: 10:00 – 18:00
Sun: 11:30 – 16:00
