Suresh Lip Gloss

I adore boutique’esque style cosmetic brands. They’re like finding little hidden treasures. I recently have had the pleasure of meeting NY based makeup artist Suresh Senevirante. After years of working in the cosmetics industry, he created a lovely little line of some of the prettiest lip glosses I’ve seen. We met for coffee in Manhattans Union Square area and spent the afternoon swapping backstage makeup artist stories whist he talked me through his brand.

I was really impressed with the Suresh glosses as they are paraben- free, have spf 8, are non-comedogenic and hypo allergenic. They are tasteless and fragrance free-so no icky, sweet synthetic flavour that puts you off your gloss! They contain vitamin E and are non greasy or sticky but they stay on. Best of all is the colour range. The glosses colour on the lips look like they do in the tube… which isn’t always the case with a lot of sheer glosses. The collection has an essence of crushed gemstones or pearls with a hint of sparkle. This is a compact line of wearable colours that doesn’t try to be trendy, they’re just beautiful.

Suresh told me that all the glosses are all named after important women in his life. My favourite colour was Teresa, a shimmery, fleshy nude tone.

Suresh glosses are sold in a few various locations in NYC, LA and Seattle but they are available online!

The Bliss Facial

BlissSpa_LA The Bliss Facial

Anyone familiar with the W Hotel chain will know that their motto is "your wish is our command" and there could never have been a more true wish then to hope for a fabulous LA branch of the Bliss Spa. Bliss spas are little oasis’s of pure indulgent decadence. Plus at this LA Bliss Spa they have super friendly warm California smiles oozing out of every staff member which made me feel extra super special.

I have always been a massive advocate for their triple oxygen treatment for years. When I used to do wedding makeup it was the number one treatment that I recommended for Brides pre-day, as the results for glowing skin are astounding. But, since I’ve just stepped off a plane from NYC and my skin was look dehydrated and dull I decided to go for "The Youth As We Know It‘ facial. My adorable esthetician Christina started this one hour treatment with a cleansing and massage and then she exfoliated my dead skin using a mushroom based enzyme peel which she described may feel a little "spicy". Next a cell-regenerating moisturiser was applied to my face and neck area. Then a soothing collagen mask. I was stunned how this last mask smoothed away my fine lines. In between each product application, a different area of my body was massaged into pure jelly like status to help boost over all circulation. Also what I love about Bliss treatments is that they apply hot towels to open pores rather than stick some horrible steam machine on your face like other facials do. I find steam machines tend to hit one area and then leak a drip of burning hot water onto the forehead. When I left my skin was plumped, dark circles were gone and my acne around my chin was eradicated. My skin has been left so youthful and even-toned that I haven’t needed to wear foundation.

I am in LA  to do makeup on two models for the Golden Globes. The models need to be on par with every A-lister in town to get noticed and it’s my job that they do so. I feel for any big event if you really want to be a step ahead you need a little preparation. Most celebrities in this town will have been detoxed, massaged, manicured, sweated and coiffed every inch before even considering sitting in a makeup chair. The Youth As We Know It treatment is definitely my new number one choice for any pre-red carpet prep. I’ve phoned my clients and told them to book in asap before the event. It will give them flawless results and will make my makeup application a breeze to apply.

For those of you who maybe visiting the LA area this is a definite destination spot for anyone in need of some beauty treatment TLC. They even serve you the most delicious brownies and teas in the lounge area too. They just opened a brand new location in Hollywood!

Red Lipstick…the little black dress of the makeup world!

Posted by Rachel Wood on January 12th, 2010

Red_lipstick_RachelWood Red Lipstick...the little black dress of the makeup world!
Any woman with the tiniest whisper of fashion will have a fool proof, wonder of LBD in her closet. The LBD dress is instant glamour; it gives the wearer a combo of sex appeal and self assured confidence. I feel women should have the same fool proof instant power product in their makeup kits… the perfect red lipstick.

On a clean face with barely there product can give the wearer a strong, edgy, androgynous tone straight off the catwalk.  A red lipstick worn with a flick of black cream eye liner on the eyes can give the wearer a dash of flavour straight out of Mad Men. Create a moody, oversized smoky eye paired up with a red lip and you’ve got 1930s silent film star personified. But which one to choose? I was asked to go shopping with the beauty editor from Celebs on Sunday to create, pick, choose create a chart of red lipstick for every skin tone.  My absolute favourites are Giorgio Armani 401 and Benefits Flirt Alert. They are the most wearable colour for most skin tones, feel nice on the lips and has lasting power.

An interview with Samantha Chapman of FashionFace.TV

Posted by Rachel Wood on January 2nd, 2010

Fashion_FaceTV An interview with Samantha Chapman of FashionFace.TV

Samantha Chapman is an accomplished make-up artist and lecturer with extensive experience in the fashion, television and music industry.Samantha who is one half (the other half is her sister Nic) of FashionFace.TV.  Samantha and Nicola, run www.fashionface.tv - a unique website which shows how to create fashion forward looks as well as vintage classics. To date the videos have had over 9.7 million hits!

How long have you been working as a makeup artist and where did you train?
SC - Both Nicola (studied in 1997) and I (1994) completed a 2 year course covering Media make-up, Hairdressing and Wig making at the College of West Anglia in Norfolk. Although the course was a great starting point I believe that I learnt so much more from assisting and working on set. I recommend that students study shorter courses and assist as soon as they can.

What Fashion Face TV is?
SC - Fashionface.tv is a make-up tutorial website applicable to all levels of talent from the complete novice to working artists. We have videos focusing on the basics through to trend, period and celebrity inspired looks. Our videos are also available on YouTube and via an iPhone application.
Fashion_FaceTV_1 An interview with Samantha Chapman of FashionFace.TV
How/why did you create the site?
SC - I started Fashionface as an antithesis to the tutorials on YouTube which lack correct information and skill. As YouTube tutorials have such a huge community it worries me that those videos represent what many viewers think encompasses Make-up artistry and because of that they belittle the talented make-up artists that work really hard to be successful in an incredibly competitive industry.
Fashionface is all about the guts it takes to live on the breadline for what you love and to put in the hours of hard and often unpaid work until you finally earn a decent living. Nic and I want those that watch Fashionface.tv to aspire to work hard and not assume make-up artistry is a ‘fluffy pink’ career that can be picked up and put down easily.

What have been some of your favourite looks to create?
SC - I love to re-create the seasonal trends. Rather that following the magazines predictions, I research the key shows from London, Milan, NY and Paris and look for the most common trends.
I also love to re-create the period looks. Marlene Dietrich was my personal favourite I also love Nic’s Raquel Welch tutorial.

Where do you get your ideas from?
SC - Films books, and magazines mostly. There is a Fashionface library on the website that lists alot of the books and films that we use. Nicola and I also speak on the phone about 5 times a day. We get lots of ideas and expand on others by brainstorming the old fashioned way.
illamasqua An interview with Samantha Chapman of FashionFace.TV
What are some of your favourite products?
SC - My favourites change all the time but my current faves are:
Beaute Weightless Creme lipsticks
Benefit Babe Cake liner
Bobbi Brown University palette
Illamasqua Brow & lash gel
Estee Lauder Sumptuous Color Mascaras
Louise Young make-up brushes
Illamasqua Medium pencils
Benefit Coralista Blush.
