The colour of this spool of thread was ‘elephant.’ Today I worked with an excellent seamstress, who showed me this spool and told me that even though it was empty she couldn’t bear to throw it out because she liked the name of the colour!

The colour of thread always used to have a name and now it just seems to have a number. It just seems a bit sad. A name is important: if I like a colour of nail polish and it has a cute name, somehow I like it more. One of my favourite colours in high school was called pink lilac in love.
These spools are beautiful, but now it’s somehow a bit of a letdown to me that their colours have no name…

Food on photoshoots is more important than most people would think. Often you book a studio because you like the food. Many studios offer in-house catering and you can always tell when someone has a new chef!. A model is guaranteed a one hour break so there is always enough time to have a good hot meal. This week we had everything from roast beef, teriyaki salmon ending with crème brûlée and a warm chocolate flourless cake!

I styled a shoot with hair stylist Andrew Barton for breast cancer awareness. We had two celebrities and one breast cancer survivor. This was her first photo shoot and she said she’d never look at a magazine the same way – she never knew how many people were really involved in a photo shoot! I was a bit surprized by that, but really the reader just sees a nice image – the finished product. There was a hair and makeup team, a photographer with assistants, people from the PR and the client. I think there were about 20 people there, all involved and responsible for different aspects of the shoot.

I was recently on a shoot and for some reason it dawned on me that a lot of people don’t really get how many things you have to think about when you’re the stylist on a shoot! I could write a book – but instead here’s a few thoughts:
Most students new to styling don’t realize that the stylist is often the first person to arrive and the last to leave. On a shoot everyone needs to see the clothes – the creative director, the editor, photographer, hair and make up artists and the celebrity or model, so it’s important that all the clothes are set up as quickly as possible and then everyone else can get started.
There are some shoots where you know exactly beforehand what you will be using – you might have done a fitting already or it might be a designer’s look book – every shoot is different but quite often you’ll bring a good selection of clothes. After the shoot all the items are returned to the PRs or designers – the stylist doesn’t keep the clothes but sometimes if a celebrity likes something her or she might be able to keep it or the PR/designer might send them something.

Well, I have to say I feel very hip seeing myself in one of my favourite magazines! This is from the autumn issue of Zink Canada.

When Zink magazine said they’d like to interview me I was quite delighted and they asked for a picture of me so I sent them a typical headshot. Then they asked for something more editorial…hmm…I thought it would be fun to work with a Canadian team who live in London so Rachel Jones did my hair & make up and Christopher Dadey did the photography. It was quite fun doing the shoot for Zink although it was very very weird being on the other side of the camera. We shot around Carnaby Street -one of my favourite areas of London and even had a nice lunch in one of the cafes. I was a bit uncomfortable at first but as the day progresses I felt more at ease. Just dressing up was so much fun. I’ve always wanted to wear one of Manish Arora’s dresses but never felt that I had the right occasion; I felt like a super hero when I wore the sunglasses and the pink & silver dress!
