This past fashion week has been my busiest one yet. Between NY and London I headed up 9 shows and assisted on 6! All in all it was another wonderfully exhausting couple of weeks.
If I could sum up the major trend between them all, it would be the season of the bushy eyebrow! Brows were a key player on various shows from Alice Palmer to Elliot Frieze. They were pushed up and the hairs were gently drawn in to Brooke Shields in the 1980’s style proportions… think Julia Robert’s brows when she first appeared in the film-Mystic Pizza. I think it gave the male models this season a real sexy Robert Pattison in Twilight feel. In Stefan Orschel-Read’s LFW show all of the male models brows were filled in and extended to have a slight samurai warrior feel.
This great news for those who dread their monthly eye brow wax… just let them grow and keep them as animalistic as you like!

I never really loved menswear until I moved to London, and then of course I fell in love with it. The men just seem to have more style and more attitude in London.
So it only seems natural that there is a group of up and coming talented menswear designers in the UK and Carolyn Massey is one of them! Currently in her 8th season, she started her own label in 2006 after doing an MA in fashion at the Royal College of Art. She has also created a diffusion collection for Topman. Her collections can be bought in London, Marseille, Tokyo and New York.

This will be the third season of London Fashion Week to include a menswear day - is London menswear on the rise?
CM - London Menswear is definitely on the rise, and I feel lucky to be part of it.
What is the most important garment or outfit in a man’s wardrobe?
CM - A good jacket. You can’t scrimp on a good tailored jacket, apart from this, good shoes.
How important has the New Gen Men award been for you? Would you still have been able to do a show?
CM - New Gen Men has been amazing in terms of exposure, and also as we are on par with womenswear now with the award. The support has allowed me to think strategically about my label and plan where and what to do next, and the sponsorship is invaluable. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to show without it.

Will you also exhibit in Paris?
CM - I have always done a showroom in Paris during mens. Due to the mens schedule, its imperative to.
What is the inspiration for your AW2010 collection?
CM - All to be revealed… in February 2010.

Do you ever wear your menswear?
CM - Yes! All the time, and I have a strong customer base of girls that do…
Do you have a favourite fashion film?
CM - Mannequin!! All time favourite. Genius. I actually think this was one of the reasons I initially wanted to work in fashion.

Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein are the creative team behind this delightful accessory brand called Timo.
Weiland was born in Nebraska to artistic parents but moved to New York to study and pursue a career in investment banking. Finally after a few year years he decided to follow his passion and started Timo. Alan Eckstein is a former FIT student who, while still in college, started streetwear label Epic Firm. Rumour has it they are showing a men’s and women’s ready to wear collection at New York Fashion Week!

I love these bows - I think they’d look great in fashion shoot but they would be so wonderful just to wear!

Levi Palmer was raised in Texas, lived in Paris and is presently living in East London. He graduated from Central Saint Martins in June 2009 - the images are from his graduate collection. Levi worked with Jean Pierre Braganza, Robe di Kappa and Zandra Rhodes. He’s been designing menswear but has made some fabulous jewelery designs for Queen Sylvia Nnaabagereka of Buganda and Diane Pernet.
What inspired your collection?
LP - My collection was inspired by 2 things mostly, my rich Texan heritage, and my muse, 80’s supermodel and aesthete extraordinaire, Jan Strimple. I infused her glamourous and powerful personal style with just the right amount of Texas reference to create what i describe as a Softer male image
Which look represents your collection the most?
LP - Definitely the opening look, I loved the proportions of the jacket and trousers and the sophistication of colors and textures.
What would you like to do next?
LP - I am currently interviewing with several different labels, I won’t say who exactly but think BIG and think ITALIAN.

Will stay in London?
LP - I would LOVE to stay in London as it is such an exciting city and so full of inspiration. However at this moment in time it may be necessary for me to leave temporarily as I have only been approached by one british company and their offer was not exactly what i am currently looking for
What designers inspire you?
LP - Alway been a HUGE fan of Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent, and Karl Lagerfeld.

Do you own any cowboy boots?
LP - 4 tall pair and 2 ankle mock cowboy boots for when i want to wear tapered trousers and not tuck them in
What do you miss most about Texas?
LP - The amazing sunshine and friendliness of the natives, even if they are having a bad day they will go out of their way to help and be kind to you.
