What is the source of cashmere fiber? Cashmere fiber is from the Kashmir goat!
Great Orme Kashmiri goats that live in Conwy North, Wales like to eat elder, gorse, hawthorn, bracken, bramble, ivy, stinging nettles and privet. Most goats are quite picky eaters and enjoy grazing on the tips of woody shrubs and trees.
Sheep and even Angora goats can produce about 10 pounds of wool from a shearing, but the Cashmere goat grows its fiber only once a year, during the motling season, when the goat would naturally shed it’s coat. It takes about a week to comb out by hand, yielding only about 4 ounces of cashmere down, and it takes about 10 ounces to make one womens single-ply sweater.
So the answer is about 4 ounces per year, not even half a sweater – this of course is why Cashmere is so expensive!

Knitting has become popular again. Maybe it’s because it’s getting cold outside and we are thinking knitwear or maybe it’s just something creative to do. It’s not about economics as it’s often cheaper to buy a sweater then to make one. I personally love the accessories, the little gloves, hats and scarves!

Rowan have some of my favourite knitting patterns. (I don’t knit but my mum is an amazing knitter – which is why I probably don’t knit – I never needed to!) Rowan Studio offers some very fashion forward patterns – from capes to cardigans – you’d never think that knitwear could be sexy but it can!
Future Publishing is introducing a new magazine The Knitter in January 2009. It’s a monthly glossy magazine targeting the skilled knitter (i.e not me). The 100-page magazine will feature 10 patterns every month and a trend section with catwalk fashions.
Brandon Mably designs knitwear patterns for Vogue Knitting and Rowan Yarns. On December 6th he’s giving a workshop at the Fashion and Textile Museum. He will guide participants in choosing a range of colours and how to apply them into a swatch. Intarsia and fairisle will be demonstrated as part of the workshop, along with knitting in your ends. It is open to all levels with experience in basic stocking stitch, which will be used as the main stitch in the workshop!

The Royal Collage of Art was transformed for it’s MA fashion show.

It’s really important to see London’s new talent. At the RCA there are 32 postgraduate students in menswear, womenswear, knitwear, accessories, footwear and millinery who are showcasing their garments both on the catwalk and in a static exhibition. I didn’t get see any other shows this week as I’d been quite busy shooting so it was good to see at least one show. The life of a designer is not as glamorous as it looks. It’s highly competitive and in a couple of minutes you’ve been judged on your life’s work – it’s quite brutal but I’m not sure that there’s a better process.

I’m a terrible knitter so I’m very appreciative and awe-inspired by people who can knit. When I saw this wedding dress in Harrods (displayed at the “Origins” counter) I just loved it! It’s called ‘The Elizabeth’, and it was designed and hand-knitted by Jemma Sykes for Butcher Couture. The dress is made from 100% certified organic wool and dyed naturally in soft pink. I really love the name ‘Butcher Couture’ and their specialty is 100% organic bovine leather!
