Fortunately this September I had the opportunity to assist Stylist Rebekah Roy again at London Fashion Week Spring Summer 2010! The shows I assisted at were The Ones to Watch, Jasper Garvida, Alice Palmer, Harriet’s Muse, Fashion Shenzhen and William Tempest.
Friday 18th September: The Ones to Watch showcasing 4 new designers Ada Zanditon, Dean Quinn, Hermione de Paula & Marko Mitanovski. The backstage area was quite chaotic as there were 4 different designers with about 12 looks each. I assisted closely with Marko Mitanovski’s collection, as there were lots of garments to each look and very theatrical hair and makeup to work with!
Saturday 19th September: Jasper Garvida presentation at the On/Off venue. The collection was very colourful with some multi coloured crochet pieces and a lot of detailed evening wear. Fittings ran smoothly but I left to go to the next show and set up, so I didn’t get to actually see the presentation but I heard it ran well!

Alice Palmer then showcased her new knitwear collection. The pieces were absolutely beautiful. Alice Palmer collaborated with jewellery designer’s Fannie Schiavoni S/S 10 collection (which I love!)
I got the opportunity to see a couple of fashion shows during the Friday and Saturday, which I really enjoy doing!
Sunday 20th September: Harriet’s Muse presentation took place. This year they were showcasing their Spring Summer ’10 collection on 13 black mannequins with 2 models. This was my first ever experience dressing mannequins which was interesting! I particularly liked the use of belts/corsets draped across the mannequin’s shoulders. Stuck around for the presentation, which seemed a great success!
I then saw the Alexandra Agrover Presentation, which featured a short film and lots and lots of black! Even black liquorice!
I also had the opportunity to see this years Merit Award designer David Koma’s show.
Monday 21st September: Fashion Shenzhen are 3 Chinese Fashion Designers Xiendier, Ground Show and Tangy and they have not shown in London before now. Two of the designers had 12 looks each and the other designer had 24 looks which made for 4 changes per model- being very organised helped fittings run efficiently! There was definitely a language barrier between the designer and us working and there were even translators but luckily this did not stop the show being effective.
Straight afterward was the call time for last years Merit Award designer, William Tempest showcasing his Spring Summer 2010 collection that was stunning in corals, charcoal and metallic. I particularly loved the addition of handbags! Everything was very organised and particularly calm back stage- which made for a wonderful end to a chaotic week!
Yet again I’d like to thank Rebekah Roy for giving me the opportunity to help out at London Fashion Week- the experience that I have gained during the past 2 seasons is so invaluable!

In February I took a little time out from working on my 3rd year collection and went back to London to help Rebekah Roy backstage at some fashion shows at London Fashion Week. The shows I assisted at were the Ones To Watch, Romeo Pires, Harriet’s Muse and William Tempest.
Friday 20th February: The Ones To Watch showcasing 4 new designers might-T by Kumiko Watari, Lu Flux, Alice Palmer and Studio_805. The backstage area was quite chaotic as there were 4 different designers with about 12 looks each. There were tons of models therefore lots of hairdressers and make up artists- as well as the designers and assistants. However the show ran smoothly!
Saturday 21st February: Romeo Pires showcasing a collection of backwards-worn garments along with amazing bizarre backwards shoes and hair. The garments are also inspiring for my collection as I am interested in how clothes can be worn on the wrong part of the body. (Referencing the Monolith Totem Pole, Oslo).

While I was in London, Rebekah gave me the opportunity to see some fashion shows! After the show I worked at on the Saturday afternoon, I dashed across London to see the Basso and Brook show, which was amazing. There was a very feminine feel to the garments -almost like a tea party with floral printed silks and satins.
I also got to see the Horace show, which is a much punkier and edgier brand aimed at a younger audience. Guys and girls strutted down the runway presenting some very 90’s shredded denim and tons and tons of black.
Monday 23rd February: The Harriet’s Muse presentation was taking place. The backstage area was quite relaxed as there were only 4 looks in total. I helped out by sewing on buttons onto the amazing dresses. The presentation was a styling display; with the designers themselves dressing the 4 models live on stage.

Straight afterwards was the call time for the William Tempest show and compared to the other shows the backstage area was very organised. My time was spent double checking the looks on a few of the models and making sure the shoes were comfortable for them and if not adding an insole etc.
Overall the experience that I have gained at London Fashion Week is so invaluable and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I get to help out at London Fashion Week in September 2009!

Harriet’s Muse designers Craig Spellar and Cheryl Langley did a live presentation on the catwalk during London Fashion Week. I find it ironic as they are two very unassuming designers, who would prefer not to take a bow on stage after the show and here they are on stage performing!
Craig and Cheryl recycled fabrics and old patterns creating four new dresses. The fabrics were over-dyed, shredded and brushed to create something wonderful and new.
I’ve worked with Harriet’s Muse for many years and it’s amazing to see an old garment reinvented and given new life and still remain in their signature style: corsets, leather waist cinchers, layers of french silk and long ribbon. You recognize a fabric from a few seasons ago and you see it in a whole new way.

In this show even though most of it happens on stage there is always something to do before the show! All my assistants can sew and are super fabulous!!

Craig and Cheryl wiring a dress.

Rachel Wood did the makeup look and Tim Furssdonn from Toni & Guy styled the hair. We’ve worked together with Harriet’s Muse for years so it just feels so easy and calm backstage – and fun!

I love a good online chat! Fashion editor Khabi Mirza and assistant fashion editor Laura Jackson of Drapers typed away until their fingers were raw giving us the hits and misses of this seasons catwalk.
Things to pay attention to:
Khabi Mirza: "The oversized bag trend has almost entirely disappeared in favour of structured styles inspired by the 1940s."
Laura Jackson: "80s trends are all over the high street in the form of neon T-shirts and graphic prints (as mentioned earlier) but are set to move over into womenswear for spring 09, and I think the high street will love them – we’ve already spotted jumpsuits and peg leg trousers on recent shopping trips so expect more and more as we hit the new year.
Khabi Mirza: "This season is all about looks that will be really tricky to replicate with cost in mind. The draping trend only really works on softly fluid silk, structured shapes are tough to follow and the prints are super intricate. Easier to copy may be the architectural shoulders and also the peg-leg and harem trousers which you can already get in Topshop."
Khabi Mirza: Belts were massive and they came in lots of permutations. Skinny belts were the strongest look and were used on tailored jackets and dresses.
Just because these are the trends we’re seeing on the catwalk it doesn’t mean we have to wear them but for fun let’s ask ourselves: how do they translate into our everyday lives? I’ve always felt London girls love oversized bags because they can fit their high heels into a big bag after a night out but I can’t resist a structured hand bag! So the solution is I have a pair of ballet flats from Bloch that fold up so small they can be hidden in a small structured handbag and I’ll just have to carry the high heels home! I confess I’m not big on the 80’s look, big hair, big shoulders – but I have ordered a Harriet’s Muse silk jumpsuit for the next season -it’s more chic than 80’s (or so I’d like to think). I love skinny belts but they don’t look good on everyone. You have to try one on and look at yourself and see how it sits on your waist. There are so many wonderful trends this and every season just don’t get caught up in a trend just because other people are wearing it or you see it in a magazine. Choose a trend that you love and that suits your style and shape!
