Author Agnes Smedley once wrote "I see no reason why a woman should not grow and develop in all those outlets which are suited to her nature, it matters not at all what they may be". Though perhaps not her intention, her words echo the sentiments of satisfied Designer outlet mall shoppers.
Though outlet malls exist globally, the US, with its already stellar conversion rates and monopoly on the "bigger is better" shopping centers, seemingly has the most wonderful of these outlets. The deals are so good they are worth salivating over and often the merchandise is so seasonal it is practically right off the catwalk!
My favorite outlet malls are along the east coast of America from the north (in the mountains right outside of New York City) to the south (Orlando, Florida). Outlet malls tend to be conveniently located near vacation hotspots so they are often scenic and accessible! The Premium Outlets in Orlando, the Wrentham Premium Outlets in Massachusetts, and Woodbury Commons in New York are each filled with brilliant shops and fabulous atmospheres that are completely unique to the locale!
However, similar to other great shopping experiences (vintage shopping, market shopping, etc) there is always the problem of scouring through the numerous options to find the places worth going to.
Generally with outlet malls, shoppers spend much of their time looking for a bargain on their visit. Some people may have an idea of what they want; other will have brands they want to purchase. However, the most successful of shoppers approach these malls without anything specific in mind. There are so many great sales on gorgeous items, but when shopping for something specific you may find that you cannot find exactly what it is you are looking for.
Orlando Premium Outlet Mall is an excellent outlet but requires some hunting effort. The mall is filled with luxurious brands including La Perla, Locaste, Donald J. Plinar, Diesel, Kenneth Cole, Burberry, Giorgio Armani, Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, and Dior. These stores often deeply discount but tend to require time, as you will have to search for the items worth the bargain. However, one can often strike gold! Early this summer I found a gorgeous Burberry Lawson bag for just $700 down from its originally price of $1500! Located just minutes away from Disney World, these outlets are a great stop during holidays with the family (8200 Vineland Avenue, Orlando, FL 32821, (407) 238-7787)!
Wrentham Village Premium Outlets are located in the Berkshires, Massachusetts about 45 minutes from Boston. Like the Orlando Outlets Wrentham has a large and wonderful selection of brands. This popular mall is perfect for someone on a slightly lower budget then the Orlando Premium Outlets. There are over 200 different shops including Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, Saks, Juicy, Uggs, Coach, Theory, Barney’s, and BCBG. Whilst the discounts and finds are excellent at this mall one should take heed that this is a very crowded shopping center (think Notting Hill Carnival crowds). However, it is totally worth it, the merchandise is very seasonal and I always a great price. One example is my recent find of a lovely Armani leather coat at Barneys for nearly ½ price at $350! The outlet is located at: One Premium Outlets Boulevard, Wrentham, MA 02093, (508) 384-0600.

The crème de la crème of outlet shopping is hands down Woodbury Commons in New York (about an hour outside the city). Fashionista across the globe will travel far and wide for this buried treasure! Woodbury is the type of shoppers’ mecca where to go there you must love to clothes, bargains and shopping. It is very crowded and very big but is equally brimming with luxury brands and has equally luxurious deals! Some of the many, many shops include, Balenciaga, Burberry, Betsey Johnson, Coach, Chloé, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Lacoste, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Prada, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, Tod’s, Tory Burch and much, much more! Whether you are looking for something specific or are just wanting to see what’s out there you will find it here! Every time I am in the States (no matter how inconvenient it may be) I make sure to hit up this shopping paradise. I bring back all my gorgeous finds to London and happily strut around in my seasonal must-haves (that I got for ½ the price)! I have gone once already this summer (but am actually going again at the end of the month) and got some fabulous Rock and Republic jeans for under $100, Prada loafers for $200 and a fabulous more then 30% off on a Chanel Cruise Collection ‘09 handbag! Woodbury is easily my top favorite place to shop retail in the world! Located at: 498 Red Apple Court, Central Valley, NY 10917, (845) 928-4000.
The process of assembling your autumnal wardrobe can be a daunting experience. Often the desire for multiple new pieces combined with a tight budget can make a girl feel overwhelmed! These outlet shops allow a girl to have a bit of luxury without the guilt! So, the next time you are travelling my fellow fashionistas (and feeling that you want to be recession savvy) it is worth investing your time and money in these marvelous Outlets!

From the Village to the Upper East Side, New York City is brimming with fabulous shops, boutiques and department stores. New York has been called the Capital of the World, but to me it will always be a fashion capital. Growing up, between my grandmother and mother I was taken to all the fashion haunts across the City. And whilst places like Henri Bendel’s, Bloomingdales, and Saks 5th Avenue were certainly shopping staples, I was lucky enough to get to know the shopping treasures hidden right in the open!
Today as I stare out my window and listen to the hustle and bustle pouring from Union Square I have decided to forsake the New Yorker’s promise and divulge my shopping secrets, so that you too can enjoy New York’s amazing shopping scene the way I have!
Chelsea Market located on 9th Avenue (between 15th and 16th street) is best known for its amazing and fresh food. However, the samples there are easily the best I’ve ever seen! Both the brands and the prices are amazing and for girls like me who LOVE designer wear but cannot afford to constantly be paying designer prices these sales are a dream! Recently, I attended a sale for Adam Lippes S/S 09 collection and left with some beautiful maxi dresses in this season must have nautical colours and themes! The prices were so affordable I was able to leave with 4 new dresses (beautiful items at sale prices can also be found at the website! Best of all the Chelsea Market sample sales are going on all year round at an almost daily basis (this week is the Elie Tahari sale), so whether you are a local girl or on a holiday you will be able to seize this fabulous opportunity!
Village Scandal is the New Yorker’s go to for beautiful, high quality millinery and accessories needs. If it goes on your head, and will take an outfit from ordinary to extraordinary you will find it at Village Scandal! For me a headband addict, I would not survive without the wonderful headbands found at this unique little East Village shop (located on 19 East 7th Street between 2nd Ave & Cooper Square). Whilst many shops of this nature have a certain style, what makes Village Scandal (East Village 19 E 7th St, between 2nd Ave & Cooper Sq) so special is its endless options of unique pieces. No matter what your style (or price tag) is you will find the perfect hat or headband to add that je ne sais quoi to your outfit! And though I am a headband kind of girl, I can honestly say the hats are as fine as the other accessories and best of all the prices are equally gorgeous!
Scoop NYC is the quintessential New Yorker’s shop. With locations all over the City (Upper East Side, Meatpacking District, Soho) it is the place to go to find the pieces that you just cannot find anywhere else and yet they seemingly stock everything! Everything from bras to bags, to boots can be find in these fabulous shops. Collections From Alice & Olivia to Zac Posen are housed in this modern, chic shop. With designer wear for men, women and children it is the kind of shop that anyone can walk in and feel it caters to their needs. Moreover, the entire store is merchandised by item, colour, classification trend and season! Filled with So, everyone from the seasoned fashionista to those who need a little more direction can walk into this store and find exactly what (they didn’t even know) they are looking for!
Shopping in New York can feel overwhelming even to a seasoned pro like myself! So, I hope this list will help guide you to shopping bliss in the fairest of cities. But, there are truly so many options and so I realize there are many wonderful boutiques I have simply been forced to leave out! But, not to worry my darlings, I promise one day I will tell you the rest… But for now, I will leave you with my top three shopping haunts, and perhaps they will soon be yours!

When I was 4 years old my mother tucked me into bed with long golden locks. However, when she rose the next morning she was dismayed to find that in the middle of the night I had taken it upon myself to freshen up my look, by cutting a huge chunk of the front of my hair off. This left me with a need for headbands, particularly those with big embellishments such as bows!
From this point my love for headbands flourished and to this day, I wear one almost everyday! Therefore it was no surprise that from Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf to the Balmain S/S catwalk, headbands have made a big return this season!
One of my favourite headband designers is the little known Maria-Cristina Trepcea. The Romanian born stunner designs mouth-wateringly beautiful headbands, which are each unique! I chased down this innovator to find out what inspires her fabulous work!
Tell us a bit about you:
MCT – I [moved to] London 2 years ago from Bucharest, Romania. I turned 21 a few weeks ago and I have just finished my second year of university where I´m doing a double degree in communication and art, design and media.
What do you design?
MCT – So far my designs (it sounds so pretentious) have included mostly headbands, some hair jewellery, a few necklaces and a pillbox hat, Audrey Hepburn inspired of course.

What fabrics do you work with?
MCT – I work with any fabric I can get, I love satin, silk and taffeta, but I´ve made headbands with ribbon from gift wrapping and shopping bags and I´ve used champagne lids to decorate them.
Who do you see wearing your pieces?
MCT – When I started making the headbands I made them for myself, a few for my very stylish mother and for my friends. I like to think that I design for the modern woman, who has a young heart, a feminine style and the courage to experiment.
How did you get started?
MCT – I made my first headband over Christmas break last year and it was because I didn´t want to buy one that I then thought was over-priced. I like to think that my price range is generally affordable.
How do you think your pieces should be worn?
MCT – I’ve worn headbands with jeans and pearls, with petty coated skirts and elegant dresses. I usually associate headbands with ideas of the retro-chic style.
How do you think your pieces should be worn?
MCT – I’ve sold a few to a sweet little boutique on Portobello Road called, and I have recently made my American debut in a boutique called Downtown Divas.
What are your future plans?
MCT – In the future I hope to become increasingly more productive and imaginative. I hope to expand my design area; I hope to design jewellery and clothes one day.
What are your hopes for your brand?
MCT – I hope that the things I make stimulate people to be creative with their style.
Which designers inspire you?
MCT – I really love the classics, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Valentino and Karl Lagerfeld.
What inspires your pieces?
MCT – The best places to find inspiration are the streets, my mom´s closet and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
What inspires your pieces?
MCT – Different cultures influence my designs in ways that I don´t even realize. I can tell after making something that it has been influenced by something I saw somewhere on my travels.
What are your interests beyond designing?
MCT – Some of my other interests are films, photography and cooking.
Tell us about your personal style?
MCT – I go through phases, I recently went through a retro phase and I only wore fifties inspired outfits with vintage pieces and lace gloves from my great grandmother. Before that it was the hippie phase and now it´s something more eclectic.
Who influences your personal style?
MCT – Audrey Hepburn (an expected cliché), Grace Kelly, Diane Keaton and my mother.
Where do you shop?
MCT – I shop everywhere, from vintage shops to high street shops, to boutiques to the fanciest department stores. I don´t think snobbery helps to develop one´s style, I think dressing is about self-expression and there can be no limits to that.

"The quickest way to know a woman is to go shopping with her” — Marcelene Cox
My mother always said that everyone has at least one natural talent. If this is true, then mine is clearly shopping. It is not a talent for bargain hunting that I possess (although my bank manager suggests that it should be); rather, it is my skill for finding unique pieces at surprisingly affordable prices. As a relative newcomer to London (8 years), it took some detective work to source out such shops. But, over the years, I have managed to discover some truly wonderful shops which, season after season, acquire gorgeous collections!

The Vestry is one of these shops. Located on Kings Road in Chelsea, this shop is the place to go for the perfect dress! With prices ranging from under £20-50, it is easy to walk out with 5 or 6 new styles for under £100! Despite the extremely affordable prices, the quality of the pieces does not give it away! What makes the clothes particularly special is that each piece is designed to highlight the body’s curves. Over the weekend I visited this beloved shop and found that the S/S 09 collections are wonderful! From lace, backless mini dresses to whimsical floral maxi dresses, this summer you can afford to get a dress for any occasion. Whether it is a garden party or a club night, you will have no trouble finding a dress here.
Shop online at The Vestry or 120 Kings Road Chelsea, London

The first time I walked into Tofu Fashion in Covent Garden, my heart began beating fast and loud; I was sure the other customers could hear it! The collection was stunning, innovative, and best of all, affordable. Tofu is filled with flirty, frilly and funky fashions. It is the kind of shop in which you are sad upon leaving because you cannot walk out with everything. Plus, as the shop has a very quick turnover. It is worth a weekly visit! Tofu is my personal go to shop for instant wardrobe revitalisation!
I recently purchased this chic Audrey Hepburn inspired Trench Dress featuring a caped back. It is perfect for a rainy spring day in London or anywhere else. It looks wonderful dressed up with a pair of sassy heels, but equally as fabulous with a pair of ballet flats (I love to wear it with my black Chanel flats)! As soon as I put it on. I am transformed into Holly Golightly. I just need Paul (George Peppard) and Cat!
Shop online at Tofu Fashion or 38 Earlham Street London WC2H 9LH
Strawberry Kats is a new brand and a new find for me. However, it is quickly establishing itself as the brand to know! The line is brimming with fresh, feminine unique pieces with a bit of an edge. Plus, the pieces can be easily mixed and matched! Moreover, the Company is environmentally conscious. I recently bought a lovely frill top and paired it with their monochrome stripe high waisted skirt and a red belt. Not surprisingly, it came together perfectly! The Strawberry Kats collection can be purchased online and at Topshop Oxford Circus. Can’t wait until it opens a Flagship store.
Strawberry Kats is sold in Topshop Oxford Circus.
As spring becomes summer, not only does the plant life blossom, so too does the fashion scene. Whether you are a girl on a budget or just looking to add pizzazz and style to your wardrobe, you can find what you are looking for at these trendy shops. I know I will!

Princess and international style icon Raya Al Khalifa is a living dream with a fabulous wardrobe to match! The Bahraini born Londoner has spent the majority of her life splitting her time between her homes in Bahrain, London, and Florida. Her fashion is eclectic and timeless with influences from all over the world contributing to her unique and inspirational style.
How would you describe your style?
RA: Being Middle Eastern and having a good dose of Floridian glamour injected to my aesthetic tastes means I really love opulence and shiny bright pretty things. The Londoner in me, however, pulls some of it back, creating the perfect blend so as not to make me look too tropical or typical or even tragic… I hope!
Who are your style icons?
RA: My grandmother, who was always immaculate, and Coco Chanel for her shift in the way modern women dress.
What inspires your style?
RA – Location! I can get away with different things in Europe than America and the same for the Middle East. So my location inspires me. Art, sub-culture, and fashion shows inspire me as well! I’m always ready and willing to try something that seems a bit avant-garde before it does become very commercial.
Do you prefer Middle Eastern fashion or Western Style?
RA: I genuinely love and am inspired by both.
What is your favourite country to shop in?
RA: America, nothing beats service in America!
Do you prefer Department stores or Boutiques?
RA: Department stores
What are your favourite places to shop?
RA: Harrods, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue (the latter two in Florida of course).
Do you prefer high street trends or couture fashion?
RA: I love H&M, and Zara. You will always find me mixing contemporary designers like DVF with higher end labels and high street, its all too tempting for me… but without a doubt my higher end pieces do stand the test of time both physically and style-wise.
Who is your favourite designer/brand?
RA: It really changes season to season. This season I’m in love with Giambattista Valli’s gorgeous petticoat dresses. I also like the Prada spring/summer collection, as it looks so light, breezy and delicate with the wrinkled disheveled look but with glamorous timeless silhouettes. I’m still in love with a piece I have from last years Versace summer collection, a beige harem pant ensemble which has been carried forward to this summer season by other designers. I also like Alexander McQueen and Bottega Venetta, and Fendi. However, when looking for a fun easy dress, Pucci is always on my mind! This summer I will definitely be purchasing from the Louis Vuitton collection! The colour palette this summer is gorgeous!
Have you ever designed your own clothes?
RA: Yes, being 5′11 I sometimes feel I need to take matters into my own hands. I hate when I fall in love with a dress to only find that it is the size of a shirt on me!
What fashion magazine/websites/etc. do you like?
RA: Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, both US and UK editions and I dutifully report to style.com to check out the shows and trends!
As a new mother are you finding that you’re shopping habits or passion for fashion has been affected?
RA: Having a son I have discovered my inner tomboy. I’m more ready to get dirty in the park while in London or run in the desert back home. Because of this I have expanded on my daily casual uniform. What was once heels and pristine outfits are now over the knee flat boots with leggings and a black mini Lady Dior bag with gold hardware worn with the shoulder strap. I’m also lusting after the hunter and Jimmy Choo collaboration, which yielded what is the most stylish Wellington boot I’ve ever seen! Croc embossed rubber boots!
Do you think your son will inherit your great style?
RA: I’m already dressing him like his father, which means English gentleman with a touch of polo player chic. Ralph Lauren children’s line is a dream, and has mini me versions of the men’s clothing line for little boys. There I just got him a lovely linen summer beige suit; complete with a green and yellow tie, and a colorful handkerchief for the jacket pocket!
Did your family influence your style?
RA: I always drive everyone crazy from my mother to my husband asking his or her opinion, and then I usually just do what I want! Many times I’m greeted with uneasy looks but then soon they get the look and love it. Like my leather leggings I got last summer. Nobody was really wearing them yet, but I just loved them, my mother thought I was crazy! But after my summer holiday I put them on in a tasteful rather conservative way and she loved them. My mother-in-law hated my black nail polish too a while back, but when she saw the look with a brown short swing feather dress, killer gladiator heels and a thin spike gold belt with hundreds of gold bangles and she was sold!
As you mature, is there any style icon that you would now like to emulate?
RA: I’m just concentrating on me and what I can get away with before it’s too late!
Do you enjoy doing your own shopping?
RA: I love shopping I consider it to be my therapy!
Have you ever hired a stylist?
RA: Before I had my son, I never thought I would. However, since my son’s birth, it is a service I may one day consider.
From your wardrobe, what are your favourite pieces?
RA: Anything with feathers, my beloved handbags, my knee-high boots, my long girly dresses.
If you had to give up all your belongings but could only keep one piece, what would you choose?
RA: Hands down, I would choose my Chanel purse. I admired my mother’s and grandmother’s throughout my childhood and I’ll never forget the joy I felt when purchasing my own! It is a lovely and classic purse.
What are your fashion plans for the future?
RA: I have started to do a lot of interior decorating. I get excited with room decor and the accessories the same way I get when planning an outfit around some new piece of clothing I had been lusting after. It is art and so exciting to turn a simple room into something worth taking your breath away. It is also very rewarding at the end, as it becomes your retreat and a place to build memories!
