This sweater coat is from one of my favourite collections, Alice Palmer’s AW 2010 Batman Collection. I’ve worked with Alice for over 7 years and I’m quite excited about her AW 2013 collection Lady Vengeance – there are so many pieces that I love.

30 Seconds with Alice Palmer
What was the inspiration behind your AW13 collection?
AP – I was influenced by the film ‘Lady Vengeance’, directed by Park Chan-Wook; mainly for the revenge-seeking character Lee Geum-ja. She represented a mix of good and evil and I wanted to convey this through the use of soft and harsh fabrics, light and dark tones, see-through slashes and bold, graphic pattern.
Where are your garments made? Where do you source your wools?
AP – Small orders are made in-house and to fulfill larger orders I use factories, all within the UK. For this collection I used silk and wool, all from America, Italy and Britain; I tend to use Scottish companies for sourcing wool for the impeccable quality.
This is the first season that you’ve used leather – did that change the way you work?
AP – I love the challenge of using a different fabric and it was the first time I have introduced leather into my collections. I worked the same way I would with knit, draping the leather on the mannequin and working diagonally around the body, with the aim of creating flattering shapes.

Prepping with Emmy the Great for her Chinese New Year shoot.
Emma-Lee Moss better known as Emmy the Great, just came back from Sundance. After two well-received solo albums, Emmy worked with composer Ilan Eshkeri (Layer Cake, Kick-Ass, Coriolanus) and wrote the soundtrack to Austenland, which is the directorial debut of Napoleon Dynamite co-writer, Jerusha Hess. Austenland was one of the biggest hit at Sundance this year!
Emmy will be performing at the Chinese New Year celebrations at Trafalgar Square on February 10th. It should be quite fun as she has two performances and they expect about 50,000 people to attend – oh, what to wear!

I love travelling so I was quite excited to visit Zurich for a few days and do a fashion shoot. Of course I never manage to see the city I’m in as I’m usually in a windowless studio but I did arrive during a snow storm and it was magical.

Phoenix Magazine did a live photoshoot featuring six semi finalists for the Graduate Fashion Week Best of British for George competition. Each designer created a capsule collection that was inspired by the heritage of the local area surrounding their university. The finalists are Susanna Yi from the University of East London, Leanne Jordon from the University of Rochester, Sophie Davis from the University of Colchester and Sophie Flinders, Sophie Laycock and Katharine Whiteside from the University of Leeds. The winner receives a £1000 cash prize and their range turned into a collection for George, and the shoot will be feature in Phoenix’s September issue!

I love this tattoo – it belongs to our very cool model (also a super cool DJ) Nyx. It just seemed to sum up my sentiments for the day and how I feel about fashion.

I really enjoyed styling this shoot as each designer’s capsule collection was distinct. There is just something really fun and special about working with a young designer’s collection and these finalist are only in their second year so it will be interesting to see how they develop and what they bring to Graduate Fashion Week next year.

Maria had one of the cleanest and most organized makeup kits that I’ve ever seen!

Issue 7 is out now!
