I’d never gone to a TK Maxx press day before and was curious to see what they would show. TK Maxx is an ‘Off Price’ shop – which means it sells new, quality goods at prices that are lower than the regular retail price. They have 12 buying offices worldwide and about 200 buyers. Each store receives about 10,000 new items each week in three or four shipments. Since the stock is constantly changing it tends to be weekly magazines that call in TK Maxx for shoots.
The whole concept of ‘Off Price’ is quite interesting and is somehow different from discount retailers. So what is the difference? It’s the way things are bought: buyers are buying in season so they have access to closeouts, cancelled orders, buying directly from department stores, buying nonseasonal items at the best price (like white socks), and buying directly from the designers. The parent company TJX Companies has huge buying power and pays on time – which is a huge incentive for most vendors. They also have the ‘Gold Label’ section, which is about luxury brands – so if you are a luxury brand your ‘off price’ items are still presented to the customer as high end.
Many of the items in stock are also in season and on trend. The have lots of jewel colours for Christmas, lots of sparkle and some great fur coats.
