This past fashion week has been my busiest one yet. Between NY and London I headed up 9 shows and assisted on 6! All in all it was another wonderfully exhausting couple of weeks.
If I could sum up the major trend between them all, it would be the season of the bushy eyebrow! Brows were a key player on various shows from Alice Palmer to Elliot Frieze. They were pushed up and the hairs were gently drawn in to Brooke Shields in the 1980’s style proportions… think Julia Robert’s brows when she first appeared in the film-Mystic Pizza. I think it gave the male models this season a real sexy Robert Pattison in Twilight feel. In Stefan Orschel-Read’s LFW show all of the male models brows were filled in and extended to have a slight samurai warrior feel.
This great news for those who dread their monthly eye brow wax… just let them grow and keep them as animalistic as you like!

Issue five of FMS is the first copy to be stocked worldwide. Not only have we been accepted at Barnes & Noble (the US equivalent of WHSmith) but we’ll also be sold in countries such as Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, Norway, Croatia, Turkey, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Canada and Brazil…and we’re well excited! We celebrated at a night out at Punk.

I hardly got to see any shows this season but I did manage to catch Esprit de Corps ready to wear collection by Horace. I really enjoyed their show (designers Adam Entwistle and Emma Hales ). I loved the wigs and the clean ghostly skin.
Signature sculpted leather panels were featured throughout the collection mixed with tailored cashmere wool and crepe pleats, this season everything seemed a bit more refinfed, more luxurious. I loved the colours and the prints, it’s quite easy to wear this collection. I want the leggings and jackets, you know you’d just wear them to death. I love garments that you can just throw on and look cool – effortless without pretention.

Strolling down Oxford Street amidst LFW madness I happened to notice French Connection’s new advertising campaign and for some reason I just can’t get it out of my head since. The big bearded fella is etched on my mind and I just can’t work out why.
Up until quite recently I was working part-time at French Connection – not my finest moments I might add, I’m no longer cut out for the world of retail; too many rules and checklists ‘Hi, can I help you?’ ‘Are you ok there?’ ‘Are you shopping for a special occasion?’ No wonder people buy online these days, the computor doesn’t interrogate you as you browse.
I remember French Connection in the 90’s with their cocky advertising campaign and their abbreviation logo of such passable irreverence. It heightened a new sense of brand awareness that has since worn thinner than any hoodie ever could. ‘Fancy a FCUK’, ‘I don’t give a FCUK’ it was emblazoned all over peoples chests – it completely nailed the attitude of an era, but it sure was tacky in retrospect.
French Connection rode on the smutty train for a while, the "accidental misspelling" was an enormous controversial success for several years. Menswear was huge, boys wearing their chat-up lines on their tees, but in 2004 the truth finally caught up with the company and their sales began to slow significantly, encouraging the company to finally drop the FCUK slogan from its advertising.
Thank FCUK for that.
The new campaign, directed by Richard Flintham and shot by the photography collective Blinkk is a 60-second collection of black and white TV ads highlighting the characteristics of men and women and are supported by a series of 20-second online films as well as print and outdoor campaign. In other words, just like the FCUK campaign it’s going to be hard to ignore.
The ads are simple, to the point, elegant, mature and confident. Smart but with a nice touch of humour. Stylish but un-pretentious. The brand have returned to the same advertising agency that created the tacky FCUK slogan and rumour has it they didn’t even need to pitch for it.
They are not perfect by any means, my flatmate actually hates the new campaign she thinks they look like they’ve been "created by middle-aged over-paid corporate suits with no sense of the French Connection brand, integrity or their customer" But she has been drinking since 6pm and is a little feisty at this moment in time. But in the realm of fashion they work as a half parody half supportive piece. In store the idea looks good and from a personal view they made me think positively about the brand for the first time in a decade. Plus the guy in the bunny ears is totally hot and well, that works for me.

I love styling for Alice Palmer, I’ve styled shows for several seasons and each year everything just keeps getting stronger and stronger! Alice is a very cool girl and I don’t know of many knitters who use a draping technique or who are quite sculptural – this is not your grandmother’s knitwear!
We don’t tend to think of knitwear as cool or edgy but Alice has managed to do just that. She used over 2000 studs in this collection – which was inspired by Batman! The studded tights make the collection look very edgy and even some of the shoes have been studded – but there are many ways to wear these dresses. They really can go from day to night. Also the separates can easily be incorporate into ones wardrobe – update your favourite boyfriend jacket with a knitted skirt, or try a cape over skinny jeans! Ooh, I can’t wait for all these looks to go into production!
