Drapers Fashion Summit – The Power of the Style Press

I was part of a panel at the Drapers Fashion Summit – The Power of the Style Press, with  Colin McDowell, Founder & Creative Director of Fashion Fringe, Leon Bailey-Green, online marketing specialist, Courtney Blackman, fashion PR and Lucy Wood of Look magazine and Loretta Roberts (who organizes the Summit) was chairing the panel.

It’s always interesting when people start talking about print versus online media. Somehow people think one will rule out the other. It’s the same fear that retailers and manufactures first had ten years ago about selling online. There were afraid it would ruin their brick and mortar shops, not enhance it. They didn’t realize they could becoming something we take for granted today – multi-channel retailers. The same goes for online magazines. Most print magazines have an online component that attracts a different readership and allows their advertisers a package deal of print and online. As a fashion stylist both print work and online work are very important to me work-wise, and of course as a stylist who blogs I love online media. I can’t imagine one without the other!

Covers can be crazy like styling…Chris Martin covers Beastie Boys

Posted by Rebekah Roy on November 26th, 2009

I’m always a bit in awe when one musician takes an iconic song and makes it their own. The idea of Chris Martin from Coldplay ‘(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)’ is absolutely ridiculous…until you listen to it.

It’s a lot like styling – you can take a garment and make it anything from punk to classic, it’s all in how you work with it.

Mark Fast Influence on the High Street

This is one of Mark Fast’s dresses from his A/W 2009 collection. I love his cobweb designs – they would make great pieces on their own – if you’re brave enough – or great layering pieces. I’m a big fan of layering! You can purchase Mark Fast at Browns starting at £285.00.

We can’t all afford designer wear but our high street is influenced by what British talent creates (even if Mr. Fast is Canadian). I was recently looking at Lipsy – a great site if you want to look like a girl band or pop star. Anyway they have this a cobweb top – which made me think of Mark Fast.

Dancing With the stars Dancing with the Stars and MAC cosmetics

MAC cosmetics are known for their fantastic makeup artist pro-classes and the latest one they held in NYC didn’t disappoint. The USA’s number 1 TV program – Dancing with the Stars Head Makeup Artist Melanie Mills’ delighted an audience full of makeup artists at the Lighthouse Theatre in NYC.

She gave brief introductions and descriptions on how to create 5 different ballroom inspired makeup looks. After each detailed description – 2 professional dancers danced for the audience in full costume, hair and makeup!

This display really gave the audience the chance to see the makeup come alive and into play. Melanie also did an on-stage demo on a model while the audience got the chance to pick her brain with their makeup questions and dish out fab advice.

What a great job! Imagine all that creativity and glitter to play with. Afterwards there was a cocktail reception where we had the chance to see the dancers up close in all their glory.
