After Graduation – Work Experience
After a couple of well earned months holidaying and relaxing, I am suddenly starting to feel the pressure of being a new fashion graduate looking for work in London.
As the economy is currently experiencing a recession the job market is extremely competitive, especially for new graduates. However I am determined to land my dream job!
Having already confirmed myself a styling assistance job at London Fashion Week 2009 I am continuing to send off CVs in search of further work experience.
Currently I am looking for fashion related placements and fingers crossed one of these may land into a full time position within the near future.
Despite really enjoying work experience placements and being really fortunate for all the invaluable opportunities I have had in the past year in fashion, I look forward to finding a full time paid job that showcases what I have learnt and allows me to develop my skills further.
For the meantime I am tweaking my CV and applying for a part time job in Selfridges and Harrods on the shop floor in the fashion department. Wish me luck…………..
congrats on graduating. wow, i can’t believe you’ve been doing all this work all this time, while in school etc. if you can’t find a job, i’m definitely screwed. haha. good luck and can’t wait to see your updates from london fashion week!
Congrats on graduating!
Can I just ask when you managed to find all of your work experience/placement opportunities?
I am a Fashion Buying Graduate and have managed to get some work experience but I find the internships I am interested in all want current students, which is really frustrating!
Thanks x
Thank you!
I have been doing work experience since the summer before I started my 3rd year of Fashion Design at uni. It all happened quite coincidentally actually… I met Rebekah Roy at her Stylist talk at the Barbican and began assisting her for prep and at various shoots for a month before starting an internship at Tank Magazine. Then, during my final year I came back to London and helped Rebekah whenever she needed assistance eg. at LFW and photoshoots etc. And since then have just been applying to places and meeting new people- but I haven’t found the same trouble you are having.
I really don’t see why they won’t take you on now that you have graduated?
Just keep on applying to places that interest you/that are looking for interns and am sure something will eventually come your way!
Sana X
No matter where you are in the world the job market is hard. Now add in the cut throat and desired job field of fashion and the competition grows even more. After graduating with a Retail Merchandising degree in May and landing a full time job with the help of family, my best advice is to be diverse in your areas of learning. Soak up every opportunity and every internship possible, that field may seem unconnected and unimportant but you will never know when what you learned from that experience will come into play in your life. Be diverse to be one above everyone else, work harder than everyone else, show that you love it so much that you eat breathe and sleep your job. I have worked for small boutiques, Modus PR firm, Rebekah Roy fashion stylist, on political campaigns, uni admissions offices, and the list could go on and on. Each job has given me a little something extra to bring to the table. good luck with the search and just keep on plugging along!!! XX
