Photographer’s Studio

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 30th, 2006

Saw a cool studio in Kentish Town this evening. You go down some very steep stairs in the dark, and you feel like you’re being led down a secret passage way and voila! you’re in the cutest studio. Part of me would love to have my own studio, I know that’s more of a photographers thing…but I imagine I could build sets or environment for my fashion. It’s just nice to have ones own creative space and I’d love to have this space.

High Shoes & Sore feet

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 26th, 2006

I love platform shoes, the higher the better! Usually I find them comfortable more so then a stiletto heel, but would I opt for a pain reliever just because I’m wearing high heels?

The Telegrapher say :

…the latest wonder product discovered by
London’s hardiest party girls – a foot gel by Nurofen. Designed for
rheumatic pain, sprains, lumbago and fibrositis, among other
complaints, the Muscle Pain Relief gel will numb aching feet instantly.
And, unlike the cause of your pain, it’s a snip at £2.99

Stylist Injury

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 25th, 2006

Styling Injury Stylist InjuryOk. So every job has it’s draw backs. Most people don’t know that stylists run around all day picking up and returning garments. Carry heavy bags all over the place & taking suitcases in and out of cars. My styling injury, nothing a little acupuncture can’t heal!

Shooting in Dorset

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 25th, 2006

Been quite busy lately. Spent last weekend in Dorset. I was doing a sportswear shoot in a field. As you know I prefer the city but I do love sports/fitness wear; the fabrics can be so inovative, it’s amazing to think how fabic/technology has influence athletic performance. In 1954 the German Nation Team won the Football World Cup for the first time, wearing Adidas shoes with revolutionary screw-in studs.  450,000 pairs of shoes were produced in that year!

I didn’t stay at a grand hotel this time but it was so quaint.  I stayed at a neighbours house (who I didn’t know but the photographer did) and our room looked like it was at someones Nan’s house, which it probably was as the old lady was very sweet. It looks cuter than it was, but I slept well. I shared the room with Athena Skouvakis an mua; I worked with her ages back so it was good to meet up with her again. It felt like a sleep over! It’s such a girly room.

Misha, our model was so much fun. She studied gymnastics and specialized using the ribbon, it was beautiful to watch her using it, it has such a magical, whimsical feel about. I’ve watched it on TV before it’s such so much more beautiful to watch it in front of you.

Case Studies

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 25th, 2006

I went to Buckinghamshire for a shoot. Some of my shoots are with real people, some with models. And yes, there is a distinction between models and real people. Models tend to have a realistic self perception as they are used to seeing picture of themselves and what they really look like. This particular shoot was with a real women for a newspaper; newspapers & weeklies often send out a team to photograph someone for a story/feature that they are writing about.

Sometimes it’s very difficult for a "real" person to do a photoshoot. You have to think about what you really look like. And maybe you wouldn’t be doing the shoot if you didn’t want to look at your self…? Anyway, your body might have changed, and of course it changes it’s not stagnant! Your perception become out of sync with what you really look like, or with your memory of what you think you looked like. And for some reason you think you’re bigger then you are and you’ve been dressing for this bigger person for a while. Some women have fun at these shoots, it’s like a girly pampering day, an opportunity to have a professional make artist & stylist for an afternoon. We styled one women who was about a size 20UK and she looked amazing, she had that effervescent, bubbly personality that you just want to be around and of course she looked lovey in the shoot and we all had great fun. Another day we styled a size 16UK women, which is a very average size who had many self perception/body/style issues. She said she’d gained wait over the sometime and only wore baggy clothes. I think sometimes we are afraid of fashion we don’t understand what a powerful postive tool it can be…I guess sometimes I find it frustrating that women face so many selfesteem issues and have misconceptions about their bodies.

In the middle of nowhere asking firemen for directions…

One thing I do like about these shoots is traveling to some very picturesque places.

Jeans

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 16th, 2006

Ok, so it’s hard to find a pair of jeans. It’s all about fit, finding the right pair for your body shape and at a price within your budget is truly a challenge.

While waiting for the tube, I saw this person on the platform. You might think she looks ok, tight jeans nice big butt, it appeals to some people. Hmm but then you realize it’s a man. Ewwww what was he thinking squeezing himself into those jeans! I just feel a bit shocked when I see people dressed like this. There are so many choices & options for people to dress well, what happened?

Out & About in Brick Lane

Shopping on a Sunday in Brick Lane, lots to be inspired by! I love people watching and squeezing through crowds on a Sunday, and going to all the shops and market stalls, it always seems a bit festive.

I really love going to markets, just looking at different things and being inspired by the people passing by. I’m always searching for inspiration, I never know what that inspiration is until it hits me. And when it does it hits me hard it’s like a rush and I’m replenished, full of images & ideas.

London Denim

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 11th, 2006

Whenever I bring London Denim jeans to a shoot, all the models want to buy them, great skinny jeans! In the photo below these London Denim jeans have been customized for Harrods. I have a skirt from London Denim that I wear all the time and I’m not
a big denim wearer as I haven’t worn jeans for years. I do love denim and love to use it for shoots and I
know how versatile a good pair of jeans can really be. When I was fourteen I had the most wonderful pair of skinny drain pipe jeans that I just loved, my uncle bought them for me when we were visiting London. So when I wore then in Canada I felt super cool knowing no one else had them and that they were a present. I wore them everywhere and also had a great Levis 501 denim jacket that I wore until it was so faded and soft and then years later I gave it aways to a good friend and some how I seemed to have give up denim at that moment. And now I’m finding my way back to denim…it’s amazing how many labels are out there.

Underworld

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 10th, 2006

I love Camden. It feels like you’re in London, and you couldn’t possibly be anywhere else in the world, it’s unmistakably English.| saw some bands tonight at the Underworld, Jaz invited me, I met him on the plane to Finland for the BFI tour. I did a fashion shoot there a while back. It’s not really good to see a club in the daylight, at night it has it’s own vibe, and it’s just good to be out, but in the day it’s just dirty & musty smelling but still kind of cool.

Paper Dolls

Posted by Rebekah Roy on August 6th, 2006

I love paper dolls even when I was in highschool one of my friends gave me an art deco paper doll book which I loved. I’ve just found a virtual paper doll site www.stardoll.com. (The site attracts 300-400,000 global users per day.) Anyway, you can make a paper doll version of yourself and try on all different kinds of clothes. it’s a bit of a challenge, what eye shape do you really have, what is your nose & mouth like. Hmm I don’t think there was a hight option so I feel I’m taller then I really am…and my hair has growen since I’ve last had it cut…Of course you have to pick the closest option but it’s interesting to ask yourself what do I really look like like?
